Australian pop star Kylie Minogue received awards from Queen Elizabeth II in her annual New Year Honors list.

Kylie Minogue

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Australian pop star Kylie Minogue and the professor who created Dolly the sheep are among the prominent figures who have received awards from Queen Elizabeth II in her annual New Year Honors list.

Kylie Minogue battled back to health after suffering from breast cancer.

Minogue, 39 , and Prof. Ian Wilmut were appointed to the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the list, which is chosen by the queen on the advise of the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Other award winners included Stuart Rose, the head of the British retailer Marks and Spencer, who was handed a knighthood and "Lord of the Rings" star Ian McKellen.

The award of a Companion of Honour for the 68-year-old British actor, who already has a knighthood and has been a longtime campaigner for gay rights, recognized his efforts to promote "equality."

The New Year's list recognizes a wide range of people who are thought to have made a positive contribution to British life.

The queen hands out a range of honors including knighthoods, life peerages and gallantry awards for those serving in the armed forces and civilians.

The list is published in the official newspaper of the British monarchy, the London Gazette.

The honor's list usually attracts attention for the high-profile figures honored; previous recipients of knighthoods include the pop stars Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger but anyone can be nominated for an award.

This year's list, for example, includes some of the people who took part in the rescue operations following the flooding that affected large parts of England this summer.

Capt. Tracy Palmer, from the Salvation Army in the northern English town of Workshop, was made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) after she provided shelter for children caught up in the floods.

Wilmut, 63, created headlines around the world after he led the team of scientists that created the first mammal produced through genetic cloning in 1996.

Kylie Minogue has sold more than 60 million records worldwide in a music career lasting 20 years.

The Australian pop diva battled back to health after she was forced to cancel a world tour when she was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago.

Kylie Minogue

Saturday December 22,2007
By Elisa Roche, Showbusiness Editor
ALL eyes were on Kylie Minogue in her skin-tight dress and gold stilettos.
And the fans knocked out by sparkling Kylie included Sir Paul McCartney and Jools Holland.

The pop star was a guest on Holland’s annual Hootenanny, which will air on December 31 but which was recorded last week.

In the BBC2 show Kylie duets with Sir Paul, reveals her New Year’s resolutions, and then finishes with a seductive rendition of I Should Be So Lucky.

“I want a growth spurt,” she tells Holland, in one of his trademark chats by the piano. “I’ll be 40 next year and I’d like to be longer please.”

The pop star then treats celebrity guests Dawn French and David Tennant to a duet with music legend Sir Paul.

The pair sing Dance Tonight, one of the more upbeat singles from the former Beatle’s new album Memory Almost Full.

The song will be played minutes before the midnight gongs to see in the New Year.

“The Hootenanny is going to be one of the best ever,” said a studio guest. “The set was very open and Kylie, Macca and all the VIPs were mingling with everyone else.

“Kylie sat next to Sir Paul for most of the night and he was being a real gent, making sure her glass was full and pulling out her chair for her.”

Spice Girls UK gig

The Spice Girls failed to impress most of the critics who went to see them on Saturday at London's O2 Arena.

However, for the thousands of fans who were there, it was great to have the five-piece perform their first UK gig in nine years, the first of 16 shows at the former Millennium Dome.

Victoria Beckham, Melanie Chisholm, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell's show included 22 songs and even Bunton joined in after spraining her ankle at a previous performance.

John Lennon's hair

Lennon's hair highlight of auction
A shorn lock of John Lennon's hair has fetched £24,000 at auction as part of a sale of Beatles' memorabilia built up by a former hairdresser to the Fab Four.
The hair was sold to an unnamed telephone bidder as the highlight of a sale of the Betty Glasow collection of Beatles and film memorabilia held at Gorringes auction house in Worthing, West Sussex.
Accompanying the lock, which is stuck in a copy of Lennon's 1965 book A Spaniard In The Works, is a hand-written message which reads: "To Betty, lots of love and hair, from John Lennon xx."

Miss California USA, Raquel Beezley

Miss California USA, Raquel Beezley, front, is crowned by reigning Miss California USA Meagan Tandy at a news conference in Beverly Hills, Calif., Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007.

Blaming an accounting mix-up, Miss California USA organizers have handed this year's title from Miss Los Angeles Christina Silva to Miss Barstow Raquel Beezley. Beezley was handed the crown Thursday in a Beverly Hills ceremony by last year's Miss California, Megean Tandy, after the pageant's state director, Keith Lewis, blamed the mistake on 'human error.'

Dennis and Kimberly Quaid

Cedars-Sinai releases a statement.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the hospital where DENNIS and KIMBERLY QUAID's infant twins, ZOE and BOONE, and a third, unnamed, patient were administered an overdose of medication, today released a statement announcing changes in hospital procedure.

The babies were given a 10,000 units per milliliter dose of the drug heparin when they should have been given a 10 units per milliliter dose. In the statement, the hospital said, "The medical center's investigation found that preventable errors made by pharmacy and nursing staff caused the wrong concentration of heparin to be used."

The hospital discloses that a pharmacy technician mistakenly removed a vial of the higher concentration of the medication from the shelf and when a second pharmacy technician failed to verify the concentration of the medication, it was sent to a satellite pharmacy.

The satellite pharmacy technician did not verify the concentration of the medication, and it was put in the location in the pediatrics unit where the lower concentration medication is normally kept. Nurses who administered the heparin to the patients did not verify the medication and dosage, contrary to hospital policy.

The medical center detailed several new policies in the statement and also noted that nurses and pharmacy technicians have all been re-trained regarding high-alert medical policies and practices.

The hospital also noted in the statement: "The individuals involved in this incident were immediately relieved of duty pending investigation, and appropriate disciplinary actions are being taken."

Lists of Hollywood's highest-paid actresses

By JO PIAZZA DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
Friday, November 30th 2007, 5:57 PM

Kaster/AP

Who says nice girls finish last? America's sweetheart Reese Witherspoon is now the highest paid actress in Hollywood.

Her latest flick was a flop, but sexy Reese Witherspoon has taken the crown as this year’s highest paid Hollywood actress, commanding $15 million to $20 million a picture.

Witherspoon, who was second to Nicole Kidman on last year’s list compiled by the Hollywood Reporter, edged out Angelina Jolie, who commands about the same salary. Jolie took considerably less for the animated "Beowulf," getting just $8 million - but it was for just five weeks of work.

Cameron Diaz was third, with a $15-million-per-movie price tag. Kidman dropped to fourth place, with an asking price of $10 million to $15 million a film.

Renee Zellweger, Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts also get $10 million to $15 million paychecks, even though Roberts hasn’t appeared onscreen since 2004’s "Ocean’s Twelve." Her next film, "Charlie Wilson’s War," hits theaters in January.

Drew Barrymore and Jodie Foster, who ask $10 million to $12 million a project are numbers eight and nine, with Halle Berry in the 10 slot, asking $10 million a picture.

The full salary list appears in The Hollywood Reporter's "Women in Entertainment: Power 100" issue, on newsstands Tuesday.

Julian bought a new place in Florida?

MIAMI BEACH, Fla., Nov. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Julian Lennon, son of Beatles icon John Lennon, has purchased a residence at The Ritz-Carlton Club and Residences, South Beach, further cementing the development's status as one of the most luxurious real estate offerings on Miami Beach.

Lennon, who recently produced an award-winning documentary and is working on a sixth album, plans to split his time between his new Miami condominium and his home in Europe.
"Miami Beach is one of my favorite places, and I am excited to own a residence here," said Lennon. "I travel quite a bit and the service The Ritz- Carlton offers is incomparable. To now have it at home, will be fantastic."

The Ritz-Carlton Residences are luxurious condominiums featuring the company's legendary service. Lennon's 1,800 square foot, two-bedroom and three-bathroom residence is located in the development's 17-story North Tower with breathtaking views of the ocean from an expansive terrace. The residence also features a fully-equipped kitchen with Snaidero Italian cabinetry and state-of-the-art appliances from Sub-Zero and Miele. Prices for two-bedroom residences start at approximately $2 million.

Currently under construction and scheduled for completion in late 2009, the development will include the preservation of one Miami Beach's most significant architectural contributions - the Seville Beach Hotel. Built in 1955, the hotel's heyday coincided with the excitement of the Beatles and Miami Beach's rise to a glamour capital.

Planned community amenities include dedicated concierge services, a fine dining restaurant, in-residence gourmet dining, a full-service Ritz-Carlton spa and state-of-the-art fitness facility, and a beachfront experience encompassing five pools, three whirlpool spas, The Ritz-Carlton's signature cabanas, and a pool bar and grill. Lennon also will enjoy the private resident lounge, a recreation of the former hotel's legendary Matador Supper Club, once visited by the likes of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra.

The Ritz-Carlton Club and Residences, South Beach is being developed by luxury hotelier Lionstone Development, which owns The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach and is co-developing EPIC Residences & Hotel in Downtown Miami; and Fortune International, luxury developers of Jade Residences at Brickell Bay, Jade Ocean and Jade Beach, Artech and Le Meridien Sunny Isles Beach.

Sources tell us the twins -- Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace -- were accidentally given a massive dose of Heparin, an anti-coagulant. Babies typically get 10 units. Our sources say they were each mistakenly given 10,000 units. The drug is used to flush out IV lines and prevent blood clots. He was named University Chancellor - Brian May

Mon Nov 19, 2:05 PM ET
LONDON - Brian May, rock star and astrophysicist, has been appointed chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University.

May will be installed as the university's figurehead leader early next year, it was announced Monday. The 60-year-old Queen guitarist said the appointment was "a great honor and a great new challenge."
He is an honorary fellow of Liverpool John Moores University, which has a well-known astrophysics research institute.

"Brian May is an intensely talented individual who achieved global success with Queen," said the university's vice chancellor, Michael Brown, in a statement. "In this age of celebrity culture, it is rare to find someone who has fame, fortune and universal acclaim and yet who remains true to his core values of learning and enlightenment."

May succeeds Cherie Booth, wife of former Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Liverpool John Moores University was formed in 1992 from the former Liverpool Polytechnic.

May completed his doctorate in astrophysics earlier this year. He was awarded his qualification by Imperial College London.
He was an astrophysics student at Imperial College when he joined Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor to form Queen in 1970, but dropped his doctorate as the glam rock band became more successful.

May is the co-author of "Bang! The Complete History of the Universe," which was published last year.
